Transfer news: Sundowns announce first signing

Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed the signing of winger Antonio van Wyk, completing one of their first pieces of business ahead of the new season. The Betway Premiership giants announced the transfer on social media on Tuesday morning, welcoming the 24-year-old to Chloorkop with a message to supporters. “Yellow Nation, Antonio Van Wyk joins the African Champions ready to write his own chapter in yellow and blue,” the club announced, urging fans to make him feel at home. The move follows earlier reports that Sundowns had reached an agreement with Austrian side SV Ried and settled personal terms with the player, who returns to South African football after a stint abroad.

Van Wyk arrives after helping SV Ried secure promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga, where he scored three goals and made three assists last season as the club finished eighth. Before his move abroad, the Belhar-born winger made his name at Stellenbosch FC, progressing through the Ubuntu Football Academy before becoming a regular under Steve Barker. He played an important role in Stellenbosch’s rise, including their triumph in the 2023 Carling Knock
