Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Teko Modise has entered the conversation surrounding the Betway Premiership's Footballer of the Season award, offering his assessment of the standout performers as the campaign reaches its critical stages. Speaking in a video shared online, Modise acknowledged the difficulty of selecting a clear favorite, noting that voters often overlook first-round performances in favor of recent form. The veteran midfielder emphasised that the decision remains wide open, with several candidates making compelling cases for the prestigious individual honor.
Modise identified three primary contenders for the award. Orlando Pirates' Relebohile Mofokeng leads in attacking output with 11 goals and 8 assists across 34 appearances, displaying numbers that Modise described as impossible to ignore. However, the former captain praised Mamelodi Sundowns duo Aubrey Modiba and Teboho Mokoena for their consistency throughout the campaign. Modiba has made 34 appearances with 7 assists, while Mokoena has been instrumental in midfield with 37 games, contributing 5 goals and 1 assist across all competitions.
Modise also highlighted Golden Arrows' Siyanda Ndlovu as a potential dark horse candidate, noting that improved performances and goal contributions could enhance his credentials significantly. Despite fewer appearances than his rivals, Ndlovu has already made an impact with 4 goals and 8 assists in 19 games. Modise concluded by suggesting the race remains fluid, with players hitting peak form at different moments and the calendar year still offering opportunities for candidates to strengthen their cases before the award is determined.
