Orlando Pirates DDC reserves make history

The Orlando Pirates reserve side etched their names into history on Saturday, securing the DStv Diski Challenge title with a composed 2-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns. Knowing that a draw would have been enough, the Buccaneers avoided any late drama by delivering a controlled, disciplined display against the only team still capable of overtaking them. The result saw them finish the campaign on a remarkable 75 points, the highest tally ever recorded in the competition, while also marking the first time an Orlando Pirates reserve side has captured the DDC crown.

The match began with Sundowns pressing aggressively, nearly breaking through from a dangerous free kick before goalkeeper Bayanda Zulu reacted sharply to keep the score level. Orlando Pirates gradually found their rhythm, dominating territory midway through the first half despite losing Joy Manana to injury. Substitute Lyle Chatburn helped push Sundowns deeper, and the pressure paid off just before halftime when defender Christian Derbyshire rose highest to head the hosts into the lead. The goal transformed the atmosphere, and the Buccaneers were punished again in first-half stoppage time after Oratile Rantasi was fouled in the box, allowing Mpho Padime to calmly convert the penalty for a 2-0 advantage.

Sundowns emerged stronger after the break, spending long stretches attacking the Orlando Pirates defence. Derbyshire and Moses Mphekgoane stayed alert as the visitors pushed for a way back, with their best chance falling to Bennet Mokoena in front of an open goal, but the striker failed to connect properly. The Buccaneers nearly extended their lead when Jabulani Mokone saw his penalty saved after Seth Green was fouled, but the miss carried no consequences. The hosts comfortably managed the closing stages before celebrations erupted at the final whistle, capping a superb, record-breaking campaign.
