Mamelodi Sundowns pile the pressure on Orlando Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns have turned the Betway Premiership title race into a near-death march for their rivals after a staggering 7-4 demolition of Siwelele FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. The result propelled Masandawana six points clear at the summit with only one match remaining in their campaign, placing immense pressure on second-placed Orlando Pirates. Beyond the raw points haul, Sundowns inflicted serious damage to the goal-differential column, a crucial tiebreaker that could become decisive if Pirates manage to close the gap in their remaining fixtures.

Brayan León spearheaded the onslaught with a hat-trick, while Tashreeq Matthews weighed in with a brace and Teboho Mokoena added a goal. Siwelele also contributed to the tally via an own goal from Nyiko Mobbie. Despite shipping seven goals, Siwelele managed a spirited reply powered by a Ghampani Lungu hat-trick and a Relebogile Mokhuoane strike, but the defeat kept them stuck in ninth place and severely dented their MTN8 qualification hopes.

Sundowns will conclude their league season against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium on 12 May, knowing that three points would force Pirates to win all three of their remaining games to have any chance of overtaking them. Orlando Pirates next face bottom-side Magesi FC on Saturday evening at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, a fixture that now carries monumental significance with the title slipping further from their grasp.
