Kaizer Chiefs join Orlando Pirates in race for Betway Premiership midfielder

Kaizer Chiefs have entered the race for Golden Arrows midfielder Ayabulela Maxwele, setting up a familiar transfer battle with Orlando Pirates for the dynamic 25-year-old. According to a report by iDiski Times’ Sinethemba Makonco, the Soweto giants are both monitoring the player ahead of the June transfer window after his standout performances this season. Maxwele has made 23 league appearances for Arrows, who sit eighth in the Betway Premiership with 10 wins in 28 games, and has added six cup outings across the Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup, contributing three goals and one assist. He joined the club as a free agent after Royal AM’s expulsion from the Premier Soccer League in 2025.

Born in Mthatha, Eastern Cape on 28 June 2000, Maxwele first emerged as a junior at Mamelodi Sundowns before stints with Maritzburg United, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, and Royal AM. Described as a unique player, he operates as a specialist half central midfielder and half inverted winger, bringing high intensity to his game. His style is defined by relentless running, a high number of won duels, and committed pressing, while he also possesses the ability to drive past defenders at speed when carrying the ball.

With both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates actively seeking reinforcements, the battle for Maxwele’s signature is expected to intensify as the window approaches. His versatility and energy in midfield make him an attractive prospect for either side, and his recent form has clearly caught the attention of the league’s biggest clubs. The outcome of this pursuit will be one to watch in the coming weeks.
