Former Orlando Pirates striker Phumudzo Manenzhe has reportedly launched a scathing critique of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe following a controversial moment during Sunday's Soweto Derby at the FNB Stadium, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The incident in question saw Maboe appear to step on Relebohile Mofokeng while the young Pirates attacker lay on the ground after being fouled by Siphesihle Ndlovu. The contact went unnoticed by referee Abongile Tom, who only penalised Ndlovu for the initial foul that sparked a brief scuffle between players.
Speaking as an analyst on SuperSport TV, Manenzhe did not mince words in his assessment of Maboe's conduct. He expressed disappointment at the midfielder's actions, stating that such behaviour was uncharacteristic of the player he had observed during his appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns. Manenzhe also criticised the referee's management of the match, pointing out that several tough tackles went unpunished and missing the incident involving Mofokeng represented a significant oversight in officiating.
The incident sparked divided reactions among supporters, with Pirates fans demanding action against Maboe while others questioned whether the contact was genuinely malicious or merely accidental. Adding another layer to the debate, Maboe posted a picture on Instagram the following day showing himself interacting with Mofokeng during the match, potentially signalling that no ill will was intended behind the controversial moment. The post appeared designed to quell speculation surrounding his intentions during the heated Soweto Derby encounter.
