Here’s how much is on the line for Pirates, Sundowns and Chiefs

The Betway Premiership season is reaching a fever pitch, and for South Africa’s three biggest clubs, the stakes have never been higher. Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are locked in a tense, head-to-head battle for the league title, a prize that carries far more than just silverware. Beyond the honour and prestige of being crowned champions, the winning side will pocket a staggering R20 million from the Betway Premiership. For Pirates, the hunger is particularly acute; the club has not won the league since the 2011/12 season, a 14-year drought that makes this title chase an emotional and historic crusade for their supporters and players.

While Sundowns are chasing their ninth consecutive domestic crown, their ambitions stretch beyond South Africa’s borders. The Brazilians are still in pursuit of the biggest prize in African club football, the CAF Champions League. They face Morocco’s AS FAR in a two-legged final on 17 and 24 May, with a massive $6 million, roughly R100 million, going to the winner. This continental quest adds another layer of pressure and motivation for Masandawana, who must balance their league obligations with the ultimate test on the African stage.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs are laser-focused on securing a return to continental competition. Currently sitting third in the standings with 48 points from 27 matches, Amakhosi hold a five-point lead over fourth-placed AmaZulu. Following their recent 1-1 draw with Sundowns, they need just five points from their remaining three matches to mathematically guarantee a top-three finish. That spot would secure a place in the CAF Confederation Cup, a competition that paid $100,000 to teams eliminated in the preliminary round this season, making the financial and sporting rewards of qualification significant for the Glamour Boys.
