Former Pirates star explains what Ouaddou is doing differently from Riveiro

Former Orlando Pirates defender Ayanda Gcaba has drawn a sharp contrast between the coaching tenures of Jose Riveiro and current boss Abdeslam Ouaddou, suggesting the Buccaneers have undergone a significant tactical evolution. While Riveiro enjoyed a decorated spell, winning two trophies in his debut season and following that with further silverware—including an MTN8 title and a CAF Champions League semi-final appearance last year—Gcaba believes Ouaddou has already introduced a more dynamic and direct approach. Speaking to Gagasi FM Sport, Gcaba noted that this season’s team features more attacking players who combine directly with one another, creating a fluid and aggressive style that has translated into a marked improvement in goal-scoring output, a long-standing issue for the club.

The defensive solidity under Ouaddou has also drawn praise from the former centre-back. Gcaba highlighted the transformation at the back, noting that past Pirates sides often struggled with defensive stability, whereas the current unit has been far more reliable. He specifically lauded goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, who has amassed an impressive 19 clean sheets this season and stands on the verge of a 20th. “They’ve improved a lot,” Gcaba said, adding that the confidence gained from conceding fewer goals and winning games regularly has played a major part in the team’s resurgence.

Ouaddou’s impact is reflected in the numbers: Pirates have conceded just 12 goals all season, a stark contrast to previous campaigns. Having already secured two trophies in his debut season—matching Riveiro’s early haul—Ouaddou is now just one win away from completing a historic treble. With the club on the cusp of ending a 14-year league title drought, Gcaba’s assessment suggests that the Moroccan coach’s direct, attacking philosophy and improved defensive structure have set a new standard at Orlando Stadium.
