Former Kaizer Chiefs winger questions Themba Zwane selection

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has launched a pointed critique of Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane, arguing that the veteran is no longer capable of delivering at the required level. Speaking after Sundowns’ 1-1 draw with Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld, Khanye singled out Zwane as the team’s weakest link, noting that the 35-year-old looked off the pace and failed to influence the match before being substituted at half-time. Zwane, whose season has been disrupted by injuries and fitness issues, has mostly featured from the bench recently, but started the last three games. Khanye insisted that Sundowns lose a crucial attacking dimension when Zwane starts ahead of Nuno Santos.

The outspoken analyst praised Santos for immediately transforming Sundowns after coming on in the second half, bringing direct running, speed, and a sense of urgency that Zwane lacked. Khanye highlighted that modern football demands higher intensity in attacking areas, and that Santos provided the spark that was absent during Zwane’s time on the pitch. “If you are going to bench Nuno for Mshishi, it’s a problem,” Khanye stated, adding that Sundowns cannot rely on a player whose off-the-ball movement has become ineffective. He did, however, compliment the midfield trio of Jayden Adams, Marcelo Allende, and Teboho Mokoena for controlling large parts of the game.

The draw has suddenly reopened the Betway Premiership title race, with Sundowns still top on 65 points but Orlando Pirates now just three points behind with a game in hand. The result heaps pressure on Sundowns heading into the closing weeks of the season, especially as Pirates build momentum. Khanye’s blunt assessment underscores a growing debate about whether Zwane can still contribute meaningfully to a side chasing silverware at the highest level, with Santos’ impact offering a clear alternative for the coaching staff to consider.
