Betway Premiership coach punishes captain after penalty miss

Polokwane City coach Phuti Mohafe has defended his controversial decision to substitute captain Puleng Marema after the midfielder missed a crucial penalty in their 3-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday. Marema's wayward spot-kick at Loftus Versfeld came at a pivotal moment in the match, with the miss potentially costing his side a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit to 2-1 and seize momentum against the league leaders. Instead, Sundowns maintained their control of the game and extended their advantage at the summit of the Betway Premiership standings, reinforcing their title credentials.

Speaking candidly after the match, Mohafe stressed the importance of leadership in decisive moments, criticizing his captain's failure to convert. The coach was unapologetic about removing Marema from the field, describing the substitution as a deliberate message to the entire squad regarding accountability and the consequences of squandering critical opportunities. Mohafe acknowledged that complacency may have contributed to the miss while expressing confidence that the young player would benefit from the experience and learn valuable lessons moving forward.

Despite the heavy loss, Polokwane City remain sixth in the standings with three matches remaining in their campaign. However, Mohafe admitted that a combination of poor decisions from both the dugout and the pitch contributed to the defeat, suggesting the scoreline could have been closer had his team been more clinical in front of goal. With crucial fixtures against Richards Bay, Golden Arrows, and Marumo Gallants ahead, the Limpopo outfit will be seeking a more composed and determined response as they pursue a stronger finish to the season.
